Chapter 10 – Vibhuti vistara Yoga

Chapter 10

Shloka 1

sri-bhagavan uvaca
bhuya eva maha-baho
srnu me paramam vacah
yat te ‘ham priyamanaya
vaksyami hita-kamyaya

Sri Bhagavan said : once again, indeed O mighty armed one, hear from me supreme words which to you beloved one, I shall speak for (your) welfare.

Shloka 2

na me viduh sura-ganah
prabhavam na maharsayah
aham adir hi devanam
maharsinam ca sarvasah

Not me know multitude of divine beings, the origins, not the great sages; I am indeed (the) source of divine beings and great sages all (universe).

Shloka 3

yo mam ajam anadim ca
vetti loka-mahesvaram
asammudhah sa martyesu
sarva-papaih pramucyate

Who me birth-less and beginning-less knows Lord of Universe, not deluded he among mortals all evils (sins) is released.

Shloka 4

buddhir jnanam asammohah
ksama satyam damah samah
sukham duhkham bhavo ‘bhavo
bhayam cabhayam eva ca

Intelligence wisdom non-delusion patience truth self-restraint tranquility pleasure pain being (becoming) and non-being (dissolving, death), and fear and fearlessness indeed.

Shloka 5

ahimsa samata tustis
tapo danam yaso ‘yasah
bhavanti bhava bhutanam
matta eva prthag-vidhah

Non-violence equal mindedness contentment austerity charity fame infamy arises (manifold) conditions in beings, from me indeed, manifold.

Shloka 6

maharsayah sapta purve
catvaro manavas tatha
mad-bhava manasa jata
yesam loka imah prajah

Great sages seven in past four Manus also from me originated from mind born, from whom world these beings.

Shloka 7

etam vibhutim yogam ca
mama yo vetti tattvatah
so ‘vikalpena yogena
yujyate natra samsayah

This of manifested power and yoga of me who know in truth, he by unwavering yoga is yoked (to me) not here any doubt.

Shloka 8

aham sarvasya prabhavo
mattah sarvam pravartate
iti matva bhajante mam
budha bhava-samanvitah

I of all origin, from me all proceeds, thus having thought worship me, intelligent state of being endowed with.

Shloka 9

mac-citta mad-gata-prana
bodhayantah parasparam
kathayantas ca mam nityam
tusyanti ca ramanti ca

Thoughts concentrated on me, prana (life or life-breath) devoted to me, enlightening each other, and speaking about me always and they are content and they rejoice.

Shloka 10
tesam satata-yuktanam
bhajatam priti-purvakam
dadami buddhi-yogam tam
yena mam upayanti te

The constantly yoked (steadfast) who worship with love, I give buddi-yoga (yoga of intelligence) this, by which to me they come.

Shloka 11

tesam evanukampartham
aham ajnana-jam tamah
nasayamy atma-bhavastho
jnana-dipena bhasvata

Of them indeed (as) compassion goal, I ignorance-born darkness I cause it to be destroyed in being’s-self-dwelling with wisdom-lamp shining

Shloka 12

arjuna uvaca
param brahma param dhama
pavitram paramam bhavan
purusam sasvatam divyam
adi-devam ajam vibhum

Arjuna said : Supreme brahman, supreme abode, purifier supreme you are, being eternal divine Primal-deity birthless all pervading.

Shloka 13

ahus tvam rsayah sarve
devarsir naradas tatha
asito devalo vyasah
svayam caiva bravisi me

They call you, seers all, divine-seer Narada, also, Asita-Devala, Vyasa; and you yourself tell me.

Shloka 14

sarvam etad rtam manye
yan mam vadasi kesava
na hi te bhagavan vyaktim
vidur deva na danavah

All this true I believe, which me you told O Keshava (Krishna), not indeed your, O Blessed one, manifestation they know, the divine beings nor demons.

Shloka 15

svayam evatmanatmanam
vettha tvam purusottama
bhuta-bhavana bhutesa
deva-deva jagat-pate

Yourself indeed through yourself you know yourself O Supreme spirit, being-welfare causing Lord of beings Lord of Lords, Lord of Universe.

Shloka 16

vaktum arhasy asesena
divya hy atma-vibhutayah
yabhir vibhutibhir lokan
imams tvam vyapya tisthasi

Tell please do without remainder divine indeed self-manifestations, by which manifestations Universe this you pervading you abide.

Shloka 17

katham vidyam aham yogims
tvam sada paricintayan
kesu kesu ca bhavesu
cintyo ‘si bhagavan maya

How may I know I O yogi on you always meditating/contemplating; and in what particular aspects of being to be thought of O Bhagavan, by me?

Shloka 18

vistarenatmano yogam
vibhutim ca janardana
bhuyah kathaya trptir hi
srnvato nasti me ‘mrtam

In detail (about) yourself Yoga (power) and manifestation O Janardhana (Krishna), (and) again, please tell, satiation indeed, of hearing, not there, for me of (this) nectar (nectarine words).

Shloka 19

sri-bhagavan uvaca
hanta te kathayisyami
divya hy atma-vibhutayah
pradhanyatah kuru-srestha
nasty anto vistarasya me

Sri Bhagavan said : Listen, to you I shall explain divine indeed self-manifestations prominent ones (only) O Best of Kurus (Arjuna), not there is end in expansion of me.

Shloka 20

aham atma gudakesa
sarva-bhutasaya-sthitah
aham adis ca madhyam ca
bhutanam anta eva ca

I self (atma) O Gudakesha (Arjuna), in heart of all-being abiding and I the beginning and middle of beings and indeed the end.

Shloka 21

adityanam aham visnur
jyotisam ravir amsuman
maricir marutam asmi
naksatranam aham sasi

Of the Adityas, I am Vishnu, of the lights I am Sun radiant, Marici of the Maruts I am, of the nightly ones (stars) I am moon.

Shloka 22

vedanam sama-vedo ‘smi
devanam asmi vasavah
indriyanam manas casmi
bhutanam asmi cetana

Of the Vedas Sama-Veda I am, of the divine beings I am Vaasava, and of the senses Mind I am, of the beings I am conciousness.

Shloka 23

rudranam sankaras casmi
vitteso yaksa-raksasam
vasunam pavakas casmi
meruh sikharinam aham

And of the Rudras Shankara I am, Vittesha (Kubera) of the Yaksha-Rakshasa, and of the Vasus Pavaka I am, Meru of the (mountain) peaks, I.

Shloka 24

purodhasam ca mukhyam mam
viddhi partha brhaspatim
senaninam aham skandah
sarasam asmi sagarah

And of the house priests, Chief me, know O Partha (Arjuna), Brahaspati; of the (army) commanders I (am) Skanda, of the water bodies, I am ocean.

Shloka 25

maharsinam bhrgur aham
giram asmy ekam aksaram
yajnanam japa-yajno ‘smi
sthavaranam himalayah

Of the great seers Bhrguh I am, of the utterances (vibrations?) I am one-word (AUM), of the sacrifices chanted-prayer I am, of the immovables Himalaya.

Shloka 26

asvatthah sarva-vrksanam
devarsinam ca naradah
gandharvanam citrarathah
siddhanam kapilo munih

Ashvattah of all trees, and of the divine sages Narada, of the Gandharvas Chitraratha, of the perfected Kapila sage.

Shloka 27

uccaihsravasam asvanam
viddhi mam amrtodbhavam
airavatam gajendranam
naranam ca naradhipam

Ucchishrava of horses know me born of nectar, Airavata of the princely (royal) elephants and of men Lord (King) of men.

Shloka 28

ayudhanam aham vajram
dhenunam asmi kamadhuk
prajanas casmi kandarpah
sarpanam asmi vasukih

Of weapons I am thunderbolt, of the cows I am cow of plenty, and of procreations I am Kandarpah (Kama deva), of the serpents I am Vasuki.

Shloka 29

anantas casmi naganam
varuno yadasam aham
pitrnam aryama casmi
yamah samyamatam aham

And Ananta I am of snakes, Varuna of water creatures I am, and of the ancestors Aryama I am, Yama of the subduers I am.

Shloka 30

prahladas casmi daityanam
kalah kalayatam aham
mrganam ca mrgendro ‘ham
vainateyas ca paksinam

And Prahalada I am of the Daitya, Time of the (time based subduers) I am, and of the animals King of animals I am, and Vainateya (Garuda) of birds.

Shloka 31

pavanah pavatam asmi
ramah sastra-bhrtam aham
jhasanam makaras casmi
srotasam asmi jahnavi

Wind of purifiers I am, Rama of the weapon-bearers I, and of sea-monsters Makara I am, of the rivers I am Jahnavi (Ganga).

Shloka 32

sarganam adir antas ca
madhyam caivaham arjuna
adhyatma-vidya vidyanam
vadah pravadatam aham

Of the creations beginning and end and middle I am Arjuna, Self-knowledge of the knowledges, discourse of those who speak I.

Shloka 33

aksaranam akaro ‘smi
dvandvah samasikasya ca
aham evaksayah kalo
dhataham visvato-mukhah

Of the letters, A I am, and dvanda among compounds-words, I am indeed inexhaustible time, of the establishers (creators) all-seeing one (Brahma).

Shloka 34

mrtyuh sarva-haras caham
udbhavas ca bhavisyatam
kirtih srir vak ca narinam
smrtir medha dhrtih ksama

And death all-destroying I am, and origin among things to come (future), and fame, prosperity, speech among women (things feminine), memory, intelligence, courage, patience.

Shloka 35

brhat-sama tatha samnam
gayatri chandasam aham
masanam marga-sirso ‘ham
rtunam kusumakarah

Brhat-sama also (of) sama (chants), gayatri of the poetic-meters I, of the months margasira I, of the seasons flower-bearing (spring).

Shloka 36

dyutam chalayatam asmi
tejas tejasvinam aham
jayo ‘smi vyavasayo ‘smi
sattvam sattvavatam aham

Gambling of the cheats I am, splendor of the splendid I, victory I am, effort I am, satva of the satvic I.

Shloka 37

vrsninam vasudevo ‘smi
pandavanam dhananjayah
muninam apy aham vyasah
kavinam usana kavih

Of the Vrishni Vasudeva I am, of the Pandavas Dhananjaya (Arjuna), of the sages, also, I (am) Vyasa, of the seers Ushna the seer.

Shloka 38

dando damayatam asmi
nitir asmi jigisatam
maunam caivasmi guhyanam
jnanam jnanavatam aham

Power of the rulers I am, guidance (morality) I am of the those who seek victory, and silence indeed I am of the secrets, knowledge of the knowing, I.

Shloka 39

yac capi sarva-bhutanam
bijam tad aham arjuna
na tad asti vina yat syan
maya bhutam caracaram

And which also all-beings the seed that I Arjuna, not that there is without which is could exist, by me being (existence) animate and inanimate.

Shloka 40

nanto ‘sti mama divyanam
vibhutinam parantapa
esa tuddesatah prokto
vibhuter vistaro maya

Not end there is of me (my) divine manifestations O Scorcher of foe (Arjuna), this but examples (I) declared of manifestations extent of mine.

Shloka 41

yad yad vibhutimat sattvam
srimad urjitam eva va
tat tad evavagaccha tvam
mama tejo-‘msa-sambhavam

Whatever powerful being glorious and vigorous indeed, (in) that indeed understand you, of my fraction-splendor origin.

Shloka 42

atha va bahunaitena
kim jnatena tavarjuna
vistabhyaham idam krtsnam
ekamsena sthito jagat

But extensive this what by the knowledge to you Arjuna, supporting I this entire, one portion constantly, universe.
