Chapter 9
Shloka 1
sri-bhagavan uvaca
idam tu te guhyatamam
pravaksyamy anasuyave
jnanam vijnana-sahitam
yaj jnatva moksyase ‘subhat
Sri Bhagavan said : This indeed to you most secret I shall declare not-disbelieving one (or not-jealous one), wisdom and discrimination combined, which having known, you’ll be released from impurity.
Shloka 2
raja-vidya raja-guhyam
pavitram idam uttamam
pratyaksavagamam dharmyam
su-sukham kartum avyayam
Royal-knowledge, royal secret, pure this supreme, which can be plainly understood (before eyes) dharmic, easily practised imperishable.
Shloka 3
asraddadhanah purusa
dharmasyasya parantapa
aprapya mam nivartante
mrtyu-samsara-vartmani
Those of no-faith men, this dharma O Scorcher of foe (Arjuna), not attaining me return (to) death-transmigration-path.
Shloka 4
maya tatam idam sarvam
jagad avyakta-murtina
mat-sthani sarva-bhutani
na caham tesv avasthitah
By me pervaded this all universe, (by my) unmanifest-aspect, in me abiding all beings, and not I in them abiding.
Shloka 5
na ca mat-sthani bhutani
pasya me yogam aisvaram
bhuta-bhrn na ca bhuta-stho
mamatma bhuta-bhavanah
And not in me abiding beings, see my yoga-majesty, supporting beings and not abiding in beings, my self (atma) cause beings to be.
Shloka 6
yathakasa-sthito nityam
vayuh sarvatra-go mahan
tatha sarvani bhutani
mat-sthanity upadharaya
As in sky (ether) abiding eternally wind moving-everywhere mighty, thus all beings in me abiding, thus consider.
Shloka 7
sarva-bhutani kaunteya
prakrtim yanti mamikam
kalpa-ksaye punas tani
kalpadau visrjamy aham
All beings Kaunteya (Arjuna), into nature go (of) mine (at) end of kalpa (age); again them at beginning of kapla, I send forth.
Shloka 8
prakrtim svam avastabhya
visrjami punah punah
bhuta-gramam imam krtsnam
avasam prakrter vasat
Nature of my own resting upon, I send forth again and again multitude-of-beings all this, without will (of their own), by will of nature.
Shloka 9
na ca mam tani karmani
nibadhnanti dhananjaya
udasina-vad asinam
asaktam tesu karmasu
And not me these actions bind O Dhananjaya (Arjuna), indifferently (being aside unaffectedly) sitting/resting unattached in these actions.
Shloka 10
mayadhyaksena prakrtih
suyate sa-caracaram
hetunanena kaunteya
jagad viparivartate
With me as overseer nature brings forth both animate (beings) and inanimate (objects) because of this, O Kaunteya (Arjuna), universe revolves.
Shloka 11
avajananti mam mudha
manusim tanum asritam
param bhavam ajananto
mama bhuta-mahesvaram
They deride me confused human form assuming, Supreme being not knowing mine Lord of beings.
Shloka 12
moghasa mogha-karmano
mogha-jnana vicetasah
raksasim asurim caiva
prakrtim mohinim sritah
Those of vain hopes, those of vain actions, those of vain knowledge without thought; but abiding in confused evil, and demonic nature.
Shloka 13
mahatmanas tu mam partha
daivim prakrtim asritah
bhajanty ananya-manaso
jnatva bhutadim avyayam
Great souls, but, me, O Partha, divine nature abiding, worship with mind not wandering anywhere else, having known (me as) the origin of beings, imperishable.
Shloka 14
satatam kirtayanto mam
yatantas ca drdha-vratah
namasyantas ca mam bhaktya
nitya-yukta upasate
Always glorifying me, and striving (with) firm vows, and honoring me with devotion, ever yoked they worship.
Shloka 15
jnana-yajnena capy anye
yajanto mam upasate
ekatvena prthaktvena
bahudha visvato-mukham
And with knowledge-sacrifice indeed other sacrificing me worship, as one and as manifold, as variously manifested, facing-everywhere (omniscient).
Shloka 16
aham kratur aham yajnah
svadhaham aham ausadham
mantro ‘ham aham evajyam
aham agnir aham hutam
I am ritual, I am sacrifice, offering I am, I am herbs, mantra I am, I am indeed ghee, I am fire and I am the oblation.
Shloka 17
pitaham asya jagato
mata dhata pitamahah
vedyam pavitram omkara
rk sama yajur eva ca
Father I am of this universe mother establisher (and) grandfather, to be known purifier AUM, Rik, Sama and Yajur (Veda) indeed.
Shloka 18
gatir bharta prabhuh saksi
nivasah saranam suhrt
prabhavah pralayah sthanam
nidhanam bijam avyayam
The goal, the supporter, the Lord, the (eye) witness, the abode, the refuge, friend, the origin, the dissolution, the supporter, treasure-house, seed, imperishable.
Shloka 19
tapamy aham aham varsam
nigrhnamy utsrjami ca
amrtam caiva mrtyus ca
sad asac caham arjuna
Radiate heat I, I (am) rain, I withhold and I send forth, and immortality and indeed death, and being, non-being I am, Arjuna.
Shloka 20
trai-vidya mam soma-pah puta-papa
yajnair istva svar-gatim prarthayante
te punyam asadya surendra-lokam
asnanti divyan divi deva-bhogan
The three-Veda knowers, me, soma-drinkers, those cleansed of evil, by sacrifices worshiping heaven-goal seek; they, the meritorious gaining Indra’s-realm, enjoy divine in heavenly-realm, divine-delights.
Shloka 21
te tam bhuktva svarga-lokam visalam
ksine punye martya-lokam visanti
evam trayi-dharmam anuprapanna
gatagatam kama-kama labhante
They this having enjoyed heaven-realm expansive, in exhausted merit mortal-realm enter thus three-dharma (3 Vedas) conforming to, going and coming desiring objects of desires they obtain.
Shloka 22
ananyas cintayanto mam
ye janah paryupasate
tesam nityabhiyuktanam
yoga-ksemam vahamy aham
Not going anywhere else mind directing to me, who men worship, of them who are eternally steadfast, acquisition-possession I bring.
Shloka 23
ye ‘py anya-devata-bhakta
yajante sraddhayanvitah
te ‘pi mam eva kaunteya
yajanty avidhi-purvakam
Even who other-divine-beings worshipping, sacrifice accompanied with faith, the also to me indeed, Kaunteya (Arjuna), sacrifice (although) not according to rules (without understanding truth).
Shloka 24
aham hi sarva-yajnanam
bhokta ca prabhur eva ca
na tu mam abhijananti
tattvenatas cyavanti te
I indeed (am) all sacrifices and enjoyer and lord indeed, but not me knowing in truth, therefore they fall (deviate).
Shloka 25
yanti deva-vrata devan
pitrn yanti pitr-vratah
bhutani yanti bhutejya
yanti mad-yajino ‘pi mam
They go, the deity-devoted to the deity, ancestors they go the ancestor-devoted, to spirits they go the (to the) spirit-sacrificing, they go, the me sacrificers, indeed, to me.
Shloka 26
patram puspam phalam toyam
yo me bhaktya prayacchati
tad aham bhakty-upahrtam
asnami prayatatmanah
A leaf, a flower, a fruit, water, who to me with devotion offers, that I devotion offered eat (accept), (from the) pure-self (from him whose self is pure).
Shloka 27
yat karosi yad asnasi
yaj juhosi dadasi yat
yat tapasyasi kaunteya
tat kurusva mad-arpanam
What you do, what you eat, what you offer, give away what, what austerity you perform Kaunteya (Arjuna), that you do (as) an offering to me.
Shloka 28
subhasubha-phalair evam
moksyase karma-bandhanaih
sannyasa-yoga-yuktatma
vimukto mam upaisyasi
Good-evil-fruits thus, you will be liberated (from) karma bondage; yoked-to-sanyasa-yoga, freed me you shall come.
Shloka 29
samo ‘ham sarva-bhutesu
na me dvesyo ‘sti na priyah
ye bhajanti tu mam bhaktya
mayi te tesu capy aham
Equal (the same) I am in all beings, not (for) me is there dislike not dear; also who worship me with devotion, in me they and also in them I am.
Shloka 30
api cet su-duracaro
bhajate mam ananya-bhak
sadhur eva sa mantavyah
samyag vyavasito hi sah
Even if evil-doer worships me (with) devotion to none-else, righteous (saintly) indeed he thought to be, rightly resolved indeed he.
Shloka 31
ksipram bhavati dharmatma
sasvac-chantim nigacchati
kaunteya pratijanihi
na me bhaktah pranasyati
Quickly he becomes one of virtuous self (saintly), eternal peace he goes Kaunteya (Arjuna), know this (that) not of me a worshipper (devotee) is lost.
Shloka 32
mam hi partha vyapasritya
ye ‘pi syuh papa-yonayah
striyo vaisyas tatha sudras
te ‘pi yanti param gatim
Me indeed Partha (Arjuna) taking refuge in who, even should they be (from) evil-wombs, women, vaisya also sudra, they indeed go to supreme goal.
Shloka 33
kim punar brahmanah punya
bhakta rajarsayas tatha
anityam asukham lokam
imam prapya bhajasva mam
How again brahaman pure devotees also royal-seers, impermanent unhappy world, this attaining devote yourself to me.
Shloka 34
man-mana bhava mad-bhakto
mad-yaji mam namaskuru
mam evaisyasi yuktvaivam
atmanam mat-parayanah
Be me-minded (i.e., fix your thoughts on me) be devoted to me, perform sacrifices to me, me worship, me indeed you’ll go to, thus made steadfast self with me as supreme aim.
