Chapter 11 – Vishvaroopa Darshana Yoga

Chapter 11

Shloka 1

arjuna uvaca
mad-anugrahaya paramam
guhyam adhyatma-samjnitam
yat tvayoktam vacas tena
moho ‘yam vigato mama

Arjuna said : As a kindness to me, supreme secret self-knowledge known-as, which by you described in words, by this delusion this is gone (from) of mine.

Shloka 2

bhavapyayau hi bhutanam
srutau vistaraso maya
tvattah kamala-patraksa
mahatmyam api cavyayam

Origin and dissolution indeed of beings (those two) were heard in detail by me from you O Lotus-Petal-eyed, and also the Greatness imperishable.

Shloka 3

evam etad yathattha tvam
atmanam paramesvara
drastum icchami te rupam
aisvaram purusottama

Thus this as you describe you Self, O Supreme Lord, to see I desire your form Lordly O Supreme spirit.

Shloka 4

manyase yadi tac chakyam
maya drastum iti prabho
yogesvara tato me tvam
darsayatmanam avyayam

You think, if, that (is) possible, by me to see thus, O Lord, Lord of Yoga, then I you allow me to behold, imperishable.

Shloka 5

sri-bhagavan uvaca
pasya me partha rupani
sataso ‘tha sahasrasah
nana-vidhani divyani
nana-varnakrtini ca

Sri Bhagavan said : behold of mine O Partha (Arjuna) forms hundreds or thousands various divine and various forms.

Shloka 6

pasyadityan vasun rudran
asvinau marutas tatha
bahuny adrsta-purvani
pasyascaryani bharata

See Aditya Vasus Rudra, the two Ashvin, also Marutas many not seen before see wonders O Bharatha (Arjuna).

Shloka 7

ihaika-stham jagat krtsnam
pasyadya sa-caracaram
mama dehe gudakesa
yac canyad drastum icchasi

Here collected together Universe entire see now all animate and inanimate, of me in the body Gudakesha (Arjuna), and which other to see you desire.

Shloka 8

na tu mam sakyase drastum
anenaiva sva-caksusa
divyam dadami te caksuh
pasya me yogam aisvaram

Not but mine you can see with this indeed your-eyes, divine I give you eyes, see my power majestic.

Shloka 9

sanjaya uvaca
evam uktva tato rajan
maha-yogesvaro harih
darsayam asa parthaya
paramam rupam aisvaram

Sanjaya said : thus having said then O King, Great Yoga-Lord Hari revealed to Partha (Arjuna) Supreme form Glorious.

Shloka 10

aneka-vaktra-nayanam
anekadbhuta-darsanam
aneka-divyabharanam
divyanekodyatayudham

Of many mouths eyes, of many wondrous aspects, of many divine ornaments, many divine uplifted weapons.

Shloka 11

divya-malyambara-dharam
divya-gandhanulepanam
sarvascarya-mayam devam
anantam visvato-mukham

Divine garland (and) garment wearing, divine perfumes and ointments, all-marvelous divine being, infinite facing all directions.

Shloka 12

divi surya-sahasrasya
bhaved yugapad utthita
yadi bhah sadrsi sa syad
bhasas tasya mahatmanah

In the sky, of a thousand sun should at once (together) risen, if brightness such it would be of brightness of this Great-being.

Shloka 13

tatraika-stham jagat krtsnam
pravibhaktam anekadha
apasyad deva-devasya
sarire pandavas tada

There together-assembled universe entire divided into many he saw Lord of Lord’s, in the body of, Pandava (Arjuna) then.

Shloka 14

tatah sa vismayavisto
hrsta-roma dhananjayah
pranamya sirasa devam
krtanjalir abhasata

Then he overcome with amazement hair standing on end, Dhananjaya (Arjuna), bowing down (praying) head to the Lord, with reverent gesture said.

Shloka 15

arjuna uvaca
pasyami devams tava deva dehe
sarvams tatha bhuta-visesa-sanghan
brahmanam isam kamalasana-stham
rsims ca sarvan uragams ca divyan

Arjuna said: I see divine-beings in your, Lord, body, all, also beings (of different) species assembled, Brahma the Lord lotus-seat seated, and seers all, and serpents divine.

Shloka 16

aneka-bahudara-vaktra-netram
pasyami tvam sarvato ‘nanta-rupam
nantam na madhyam na punas tavadim
pasyami visvesvara visva-rupa

Many hands belly mouth eyes, I see you everywhere infinite-form no end, no middle no again your beginning, I see Lord of Universe, (in) Universal form.

Shloka 17

kiritinam gadinam cakrinam ca
tejo-rasim sarvato diptimantam
pasyami tvam durniriksyam samantad
diptanalarka-dyutim aprameyam

With crown with mace and with disc, mass of splendor all direction shining, I see you who is difficult to see wholly, blazing-fire-sun-radiance immeasurable.

Shloka 18

tvam aksaram paramam veditavyam
tvam asya visvasya param nidhanam
tvam avyayah sasvata-dharma-gopta
sanatanas tvam puruso mato me

You are imperishable Supreme object to be known, you of this universe supreme resting place you are imperishable eternal defender of dharma, primeval you are spirit, thought of me.

Shloka 19

anadi-madhyantam ananta-viryam
ananta-bahum sasi-surya-netram
pasyami tvam dipta-hutasa-vaktram
sva-tejasa visvam idam tapantam

Without beginning middle end infinite power infinite arms moon-sun-eyed I see you fiery-oblation-accepting mouth (face), by self-brilliance universe this illuminating (heating/burning).

Shloka 20

dyav a-prthivyor idam antaram hi
vyaptam tvayaikena disas ca sarvah
drstvadbhutam rupam ugram tavedam
loka-trayam pravyathitam mahatman

Of heaven and earth, this between indeed pervaded by you alone and directions all, having seen marvelous form terrifying of yours this, three worlds are trembling of Great one.

Shloka 21

ami hi tvam sura-sangha visanti
kecid bhitah pranjalayo grnanti
svastity uktva maharsi-siddha-sanghah
stuvanti tvam stutibhih puskalabhih

Yonder indeed of you divine-being-assembly enter, some terrified with reverent gestures praise, ‘swasti’ thus saying great-sages-perfected-ones assembly praise you praise abundunt(ly).

Shloka 22

rudraditya vasavo ye ca sadhya
visve ‘svinau marutas cosmapas ca
gandharva-yaksasura-siddha-sangha
viksante tvam vismitas caiva sarve

Rudra, Aditya Vasava who and Sadhya, Vishve-deva, Ashwini-twins, Maruta and forefathers (steam-drinkers), Gandharva, Yaksha, Asura and Perfected ones groups, they behold you and amazed indeed all.

Shloka 23

rupam mahat te bahu-vaktra-netram
maha-baho bahu-bahuru-padam
bahudaram bahu-damstra-karalam
drstva lokah pravyathitas tathaham

Form great of yours many mouth eyes, O Mighty armed one, many arms, thighs, legs, many bellies, terrifying tusks (teeth), having seen the world trembles and I.

Shloka 24

nabhah-sprsam diptam aneka-varnam
vyattananam dipta-visala-netram
drstva hi tvam pravyathitantar-atma
dhrtim na vindami samam ca visno

Sky-touching blazing many colored open mouth (face) blazing-wide-eyes, having seen indeed of yours trembles inner-self, firmness not I find, and calmness, O Vishnu.

Shloka 25

damstra-karalani ca te mukhani
drstvaiva kalanala-sannibhani
diso na jane na labhe ca sarma
prasida devesa jagan-nivasa

And tusks (teeth) terrifying of your face, having seen indeed time-fire similar, direction not I know, and not gain comfort/refuge, have mercy O Lord of Gods, O dwelling of Universe.

Shloka 26

ami ca tvam dhrtarastrasya putrah
sarve sahaivavani-pala-sanghaih
bhismo dronah suta-putras tathasau
sahasmadiyair api yodha-mukhyaih

And yonder of Dhrtarashtra sons all along with king’s throngs, Bhishma, Drona, suta-putra (Karna) also yonder, together with ours also warrior-chiefs

Shloka 27

vaktrani te tvaramana visanti
damstra-karalani bhayanakani
kecid vilagna dasanantaresu
sandrsyante curnitair uttamangaih

Mouths of yours quickly enter teeth-gaping terrifying, some clinging teeth in-between, are seen with crushed heads.

Shloka 28

yatha nadinam bahavo ‘mbu-vegah
samudram evabhimukha dravanti
tatha tavami nara-loka-vira
visanti vaktrany abhivijvalanti

As of rivers many torrents ocean indeed towards flow so of you yonder man-world-heros enter mouths flaming-forth.

Shloka 29

yatha pradiptam jvalanam patanga
visanti nasaya samrddha-vegah
tathaiva nasaya visanti lokas
tavapi vaktrani samrddha-vegah

As the blazing flame moth enters to destruction with great speed, so indeed to destruction enter worlds of you indeed mouth with great speed.

Shloka 30

lelihyase grasamanah samantal
lokan samagran vadanair jvaladbhih
tejobhir apurya jagat samagram
bhasas tavograh pratapanti visno

You lick swallowing on all sides worlds all with mouths flaming, with splendor filling Universe all, radiance of yours terrifying consume O Vishnu.

Shloka 31

akhyahi me ko bhavan ugra-rupo
namo ‘stu te deva-vara prasida
vijnatum icchami bhavantam adyam
na hi prajanami tava pravrttim

Explain to me who (you are) O Lord (of) terrible-form, obeisance may it be to you of Best of the Lords have mercy, to understand I wish of yours Primal one, not indeed I know of your purpose (working).

Shloka 32

sri-bhagavan uvaca
kalo ‘smi loka-ksaya-krt pravrddho
lokan samahartum iha pravrttah
rte ‘pi tvam na bhavisyanti sarve
ye ‘vasthitah pratyanikesu yodhah

Sri Bhagavan said : Time I am world-destruction-cause mighty, for world annihilation here come forth, without even you not they shall all (exist), who arrayed in opposing ranks, soldiers.

Shloka 33

tasmat tvam uttistha yaso labhasva
jitva satrun bhunksva rajyam samrddham
mayaivaite nihatah purvam eva
nimitta-matram bhava savya-sacin

Therefore you standup glory attain! Having won enemies enjoy kingdom prosperous, by me these killed already indeed, an instrument merely be O ambidextrous archer (Arjuna).

Shloka 34

dronam ca bhismam ca jayadratham ca
karnam tathanyan api yodha-viran
maya hatams tvam jahi ma vyathistha
yudhyasva jetasi rane sapatnan

And Drona and Bhisma and Jayadhrta, Karna too other indeed soldier-heros, by me killed (already), you slay, do not hesitate; fight you will win in battle the enemies.

Shloka 35

sanjaya uvaca
etac chrutva vacanam kesavasya
krtanjalir vepamanah kiriti
namaskrtva bhuya evaha krsnam
sa-gadgadam bhita-bhitah pranamya

Sanjaya said : this having heard this words of Keshava (Krishna), with reverent gesture trembling, the one with diadem (Arjuna), having made obeisance again thus spoke to Krishna, falteringly utterly frightened bowing down.

Shloka 36

arjuna uvaca
sthane hrsikesa tava prakirtya
jagat prahrsyaty anurajyate ca
raksamsi bhitani diso dravanti
sarve namasyanti ca siddha-sanghah

Arjuna said : rightly O Hrishikesha (Krishan) your by your fame Universe rejoices and delighted, rakshasas (are) afraid and in all directions flee, and all shall bow the gathering of perfected ones.

Shloka 37

kasmac ca te na nameran mahatman
gariyase brahmano ‘py adi-kartre
ananta devesa jagan-nivasa
tvam aksaram sad-asat tat param yat

And why to you not bow, the great ones, greater than Brahma (the creator) indeed primal creator, infinite Lord of Lords, dwelling of the Universe, you imperishable truth-non-truth which is beyond that.

Shloka 38

tvam adi-devah purusah puranas
tvam asya visvasya param nidhanam
vettasi vedyam ca param ca dhama
tvaya tatam visvam ananta-rupa

You are primal-divine spirit ancient, you of this of the Universe supreme resting place, the knower you are, and that which is to be known, and supreme abode, by you pervaded universe (of) infinite forms.

Shloka 39

vayur yamo ‘gnir varunah sasankah
prajapatis tvam prapitamahas ca
namo namas te ‘stu sahasra-krtvah
punas ca bhuyo ‘pi namo namas te

Vayu, Yama, Agni, Varunah, Moon, Lord of creatures you are and great grand-father, reverence, reverence to you be it a thousand times made and further again indeed reverence reverence to you.

Shloka 40

namah purastad atha prsthatas te
namo ‘stu te sarvata eva sarva
ananta-viryamita-vikramas tvam
sarvam samapnosi tato ‘si sarvah

Obeisance from front and from behind to you, obeisance may it be to you on every direction indeed O All, infinite valor and immeasurable might you, all you pervade therefore you are all.

Shloka 41

sakheti matva prasabham yad uktam
he krsna he yadava he sakheti
ajanata mahimanam tavedam
maya pramadat pranayena vapi

Friend thus thinking impetuously which said, O Krishna O Yadava O Friend thus, by ignorance majesty of yours this by me due to negligence or with Love also,

Shloka 42

yac cavahasartham asat-krto ‘si
vihara-sayyasana-bhojanesu
eko ‘tha vapy acyuta tat-samaksam
tat ksamaye tvam aham aprameyam

And as if joking purpose disrespectfully treated you, during diversion, at bed, or while sitting or during eating, alone or even indeed, O Achyuta, before eyes of others, that pardon you me immeasurable.

Shloka 43

pitasi lokasya caracarasya
tvam asya pujyas ca gurur gariyan
na tvat-samo ‘sty abhyadhikah kuto ‘nyo
loka-traye ‘py apratima-prabhava

Father you are of this Universe of the animate-inanimate, and you of this worship-worthy Guru very venerable, not like you is there greater how any, in three worlds also, O one of incomparable glory.

Shloka 44

tasmat pranamya pranidhaya kayam
prasadaye tvam aham isam idyam
piteva putrasya sakheva sakhyuh
priyah priyayarhasi deva sodhum

Therefore with obeisance prostrating body (I ask) indulgence (mercy) of you I, Lord worship worthy, like father of the son, like friend of a friend, a lover to the beloved please do O Lord have mercy.

Shloka 45

adrsta-purvam hrsito ‘smi drstva
bhayena ca pravyathitam mano me
tad eva me darsaya deva rupam
prasida devesa jagan-nivasa

Unseen-previously which excited I am having seen, and with fear trembling (is) mind of mine, that indeed to me show O Lord the form, have mercy O Lord of Lords, abode of Universe.

Shloka 46

kiritinam gadinam cakra-hastam
icchami tvam drastum aham tathaiva
tenaiva rupena catur-bhujena
sahasra-baho bhava visva-murte

Wearing a diadem, holding a mace, disc-in-hand, (I) desire of you to see I thus indeed, with indeed (with the) form four-armed, O thousand armed one, be, one who has all forms.

Shloka 47

sri-bhagavan uvaca
maya prasannena tavarjunedam
rupam param darsitam atma-yogat
tejo-mayam visvam anantam adyam
yan me tvad anyena na drsta-purvam

Sri Bhagavan said : by me by (my) grace to you Arjuna this, form supreme shown (manifested) by my power, splendorous Universal infinite primeval, which of me other than you not seen before.

Shloka 48

na veda-yajnadhyayanair na danair
na ca kriyabhir na tapobhir ugraih
evam-rupah sakya aham nr-loke
drastum tvad anyena kuru-pravira

Not by Vedic-sacrifice or Vedic-recitation not by charity, and not rituals not austerity severe (terrible), such form possible I in human-world to see other than you O Kuru-hero (Arjuna)

Shloka 49

ma te vyatha ma ca vimudha-bhavo
drstva rupam ghoram idrn mamedam
vyapeta-bhih prita-manah punas tvam
tad eva me rupam idam prapasya

Not of you tremble and not confused state, having seen form terrible such of me this, free from fear cheerful mind again you, that indeed of me form this behold.

Shloka 50

sanjaya uvaca
ity arjunam vasudevas tathoktva
svakam rupam darsayam asa bhuyah
asvasayam asa ca bhitam enam
bhutva punah saumya-vapur mahatma

Sanjaya said : thus to Arjuna Vasudeva thus having spoken his own form he revealed again and consoled frightened on this, having assumed again gentle wonderful appearance again the great one.

Shloka 51

arjuna uvaca
drstvedam manusam rupam
tava saumyam janardana
idanim asmi samvrttah
sa-cetah prakrtim gatah

Arjuna said : having seen (seeing) this human form of you gentle O Janardana (Krishna), now I am composed, with mind to natural state gone/restored.

Shloka 52

sri-bhagavan uvaca
su-durdarsam idam rupam
drstavan asi yan mama
deva apy asya rupasya
nityam darsana-kanksinah

Sri Bhagavan said : difficult to see this form, seeing you are which of mine, even divine beings of this form constantly to see desire.

Shloka 53

naham vedair na tapasa
na danena na cejyaya
sakya evam-vidho drastum
drstavan asi mam yatha

Not I by Veda not by austerity not by charity and not by sacrifice possible in such way to see (as) having seen (by) you of me as.

Shloka 54

bhaktya tv ananyaya sakya
aham evam-vidho ‘rjuna
jnatum drastum ca tattvena
pravestum ca parantapa

By devotion alone undistracted possible I this-way Arjuna, to be known and to be seen in truth and to be entered into O Scorcher of foe (Arjuna).

Shloka 55

mat-karma-krn mat-paramo
mad-bhaktah sanga-varjitah
nirvairah sarva-bhutesu
yah sa mam eti pandava

Performing-actions for me, considering me as supreme, devoted to me freed from attachment, freed from hostility towards all beings who, he me goes to, O Pandava (Arjuna).
